History: When Nina was born, she and her parents lived in the South Boulevard Apartments, with a mom supposedly on maternity leave and a dad with 3 part-time jobs all paying barely above minimal wage. After being so behind in rent, the young parents unfortunately had to take money out of Nina’s college savings. It was for her own good though, either be on the streets or losing a couple hundred dollars toward her future. When Nina’s mother tried to go back to work, they said, “We’re sorry to say, but you haven’t worked here long enough to qualify for maternity leave, and you have been replaced.”

Distraught, she tried to hunt for a new job, which thankfully she’d found one before the next rent was due. Perhaps not so thankfully, she found a new addiction along with the new job: alcohol. It had been her closest friend in the search of money, and helped calm down the inner distress that always flooded her face. Dad had ended up getting a permanent job and rising pretty high in the ranks. They had spare money, were caught up with rent and bills, and overall, in a golden age for the next seven years.

Until mom’s addiction got the best of her. From showing up to work drunk to coming home drunk, it was bound that she’d get fired. The home experience wasn't bad though. No abuse, no terrifying anger or overwhelming sadness. The only bad things were their apartment reeked of alcohol and that Nina was much too tempted to try some of mommy’s ‘comfort’. When it happened, anger and terror filled her alcohol-aged mother and made her cry for hours. 

Rehab was needed, both mom and dad agreed. Who knew how much it would cost to get help? Again, the family began to fall behind in rent. For the next eight years, Nina’s thoughts became questions, and ‘Will the place I call home still be mine to call home?’ was a common one. Then the worse happened. Mom fell back into the drinking habit and left them. Not because she didn't love them, her desperation for her comfort was just too strong to resist. Dad struggled with work and money, Nina struggled with school and not having parents around for help and, low and behold, the two were evicted. They lost their struggles. For a while, they were able to stay with a few of dad’s friends, but still, in the end, wound up on the streets. Nina’s dad begged his mother and father to let them stay with them, and if not both, at least Nina, but it was her who refused the offer. She wouldn't live the good life and let the one who was always there be alone. So, the streets they stayed. Dad still goes to work and Nina still goes to school, though the occasional skipping was always there.

Currently, she’s trying to find ways to get money, though chances are, no one will pay her.
